Background to the Schools Directory Last year we undertook a survey with a small number of schools in which we tracked the number of phone calls, emails and letters the schools received which could have been avoided had parents gone to the school website. What we found was that a lot of parents stated that they “couldn’t remember the web site address” when told that the prospectus and the details of holidays, etc were “on the web site”. So we thought we would try to solve this problem. What we have done is build a website at the easiest address to memorise (www.schools.co.uk) which contains a list of every school in the UK. Each school can be found by entering either the postcode (or part of it), the county, the LEA, etc. The aim is that parents will be able to find their school, click on the link and be taken straight to the school website. Now everything is set up – except that final link to the school website – and that is where I need your help. If you can take one minute of your time you can set up that link and ensure that more parents will be inclined to look for information on the website rather than phone you up. Even if the facility is used by only one in ten of the parents who request a prospectus, this still reduces your phone calls and postage costs. This is a completely free service for both schools and parents, provided as part of the work of the S.E.A. All you have to do is go to www.schools.co.uk On the top left find “Main Menu” – 4th item down click on “update” and just fill in the short form. We’ll then link that web address to the school name. We won’t publish the email address – we only ask for that in case we have a query about the site. And if you want to check that we have got the details right just use the central panel to enter your postcode and your school should come up. I do hope you will join in with this scheme – it has taken a considerable amount of time and money to get it running. Of course we know other sites have tried this, but they seem to be very incomplete. Also they do not have a web address that a parent in a hurry might remember – so we thought our effort worthwhile. |
